Spent several hours walking through Boston yesterday with a Canon 6D, and 40mm lens. This is the set up I have chosen for my street photography, in time I will switch out to the new Sigma 35mm, but for now I want to see what I can do with this set up. It was probably a bad idea to begin a day out in the city with a brand new camera and being barely familiar with the functions, it wasn’t horrible, but I felt like it could have been better. Street photography is not easy, and I will never pretend that these images are “street photography”, but chasing light and shadows may not be what I really want to do. I ended up at the Haymarket Farmer’s Market. I stayed for hours, walking back and forth watching people. There are so many different cultures, people from different economic backgrounds, who wouldn’t want to spend hours, well, that is, if you enjoy watching people as much as I do. Plus, it made what I set out to do very easy, in fact hardcore street photographers would probably consider it cheating. The way the market is set up, in many spots you must form a line and follow it, people are looking at what’s for sale. It gave me time to put my camera up and shoot away. Right now I am planing to spend a bit of every weekend there, documenting the different people coming through, the workers, the environment. Back to my comment “chasing light and shadows may not be what I really want to do”. I say this because I was frustrated yesterday, its well-known, and nothing new, but getting the right street shot takes time, and may not even happen. At the end of the day I came home with 209 images, and few if any are really worth showing. What I am doing is documenting, I liked documenting people who I found some kind of interest in when I saw them, whether that’s street photography I don’t know, but I’ll keep hitting the streets and see what happens.
